January '98 Outings

At Princeton, January is the time for exams with a week of break thrown in at the end. Luckily, I finished all my coursework in December so I did not have to spend all of January in the library and thus had time for the following activities.

Visit to Smith College

I went up to Smith to give a talk in Professor Joe O'Rourke's Interterm course on the Internet. I talked about Freedom of Speech and the Internet

While at Smith, I was able to see some old friends some of whom are featured on the pictures below.

These are my friends Jen and Liz. There was a pretty big snowstorm one of the nights I was visiting and we took advantage of the crazy weather to have some snow fun.
Jen and Liz in Springfield (dropping me off at the train station). Ever notice what beautiful sculpture ice makes when it raps itself around objects? Check out the bigger version of this picture to see an example.
One of my favorite profs from Smith, Madame Rochat (Denise that is), and her wonderful husband Monsieur Robertson had me over for a very nice dinner.
We had some great conversations during the evening with some great laughs thrown in.

Trip to the Poconos

To celebrate winter and the end of yet another semester, a bunch of us headed to the Poconos for a skitrip. Some of us just went for the company (and smores), but all of us enjoyed the trip immensely. (Hm.. maybe it had to do with our great house, maybe the jacuzzi, perhaps all the food and drinks, but definitely the great people!)

The pictures below are not presented in chronological order. The point is that we had fun morning, noon and night all three days so chronological order is of little importance here.

Here we have the whole bunch, except for the fact that some people are hidden a bit. Going around the table starting in the bottom left corner are Peter, Catherine, moi, Kevin, Nina, Eric, Courtney (can't see her) Jessica, and Diane.
Music was always playing and sometimes some of us were playing to it.  Here we have Nina and Courtney showing off their dance skills in the kitchen.
In the evenings we would all gather in the living room and chat, play, or pose for photographs. (me, Decath, Courtney)
Oh, and add to all those activities: eating. Here we have Catherine taking care of the fireplace and showing off her smores-making skills.
Games, games, games... we played a lot.  Some of the games also required singing and various other talents. Here, Catherine is showing off her acting instincts.
With such a busy program, we needed some way to relax.  That's where the jacuzzi came in handy. Here I am with Liz, Decath and Jessica taking advantage of the house resource.
Since this was a ski trip, some people actually went off to ski during the day. This left them with a need for massages. Here we have a chain massage being performed by (from right to left) Catherine and Liz while Jessica just reaps the benefits of the arrangement.
The "Cutest Picture of the Trip" award goes to this photo of Nina and Eric.
